Laser treatment of glaucoma

Laser treatment of glaucoma is carried out using various types of lasers - argon continuous radiation, pulsed neodymium, diode infrared, etc.

It is customary to distinguish the following types of treatment:

  • Laser iridectomy. With it, a small hole is formed in the peripheral part of the iris, due to which the pressure in the chambers of the eye is equalized, the angle of the anterior chamber opens.
  • Laser trabeculoplasty. During it, a series of coagulations is applied along the inner surface of the trabecular diaphragm, which reduces the pressure difference in eye chambers and increases the permeability of the diaphragm to intraocular moisture.
  • Other operations leading to a decrease in IOP and improvement of vision.

Microsurgical operations

There is enough a large number of technique of anti-glaucoma operations, which are divided into 4 groups.

  • Improving the circulation of intraocular fluid (iridectomy and iridocycloretraction).
  • Fistulizing with the creation of new outflow tracts (trabeculectomy).
  • Non-penetrating fistulizing (subscleral sinusotomy, trabeculospasis).

The need for lens replacement arises when secondary glaucoma becomes one of the complications of cataracts. It is performed under local anesthesia after a comprehensive ophthalmological examination and selection of the lens itself.

The operation takes about 15 minutes, during which the surgeon removes the lens through a micro-incision of 1.6 mm, leaving a natural “pouch” capsule, in which a folded lens is placed, which straightens itself inside the eye. There are three main approaches to the treatment of glaucoma: conservative (drug), surgical and laser. Choice medical tactics determined by the type of glaucoma.

The objectives of drug treatment of glaucoma are to reduce IOP, improve blood supply to the intraocular optic nerve, and normalize metabolism in the tissues of the eye. According to their action, antiglaucoma drops are divided into three large groups:

One of the causes of increased pressure inside the eye is a deficiency of minerals and vitamins, and in herbal remedies, which form the basis folk therapy, includes a sufficient amount of these beneficial substances.

Pilocarpine hydrochloride remains one of the main antihypertensive agents used in glaucoma, with long-acting drugs being preferred. The hypotensive effect is significantly extended when using polymer films impregnated with pilocarpine.

Of the anticholinesterase agents, the following drugs for glaucoma are best known: phosphacol (0.2% solution), armies (0.01% solution). They have a longer miotic effect (more than a day).
